Waris Dirie verliet op veertienjarige leeftijd Somalie en vluchtte naar Londen waar ze ontdekt werd als model. Ze verhuisde in 1991 naar New York. Sinds 1994 is ze speciaal ambassadeur van de Verenigde Naties tegen vrouwenbesnijdenis. Vanaf 2002 woont ze in Wenen.
