This book consisting of three selfcontained studies deals with theEuripidean messengerspeech. The first study concerns the form of themessengerspeech which is that of a firstperson narrative and theconsequences of this form. The second study analyses the messengers style ofpresentation. In the third study the place and function of the messengerspeechwithin the play is discussed.Although scholars have dealt with the messengerspeech before there is nosingle uptodate work of reference available. The present study aims atfilling this void while making use of analytical tools deriving fromnarratology and dramatheory. Eight appendices are added which provide thereader with complete lists of phenomena discussed in the main text.Often considered transparent and selfexplanatory the messengerspeeches arenow shown to be both complex and subtle texts. «
