Emoties staan sinds twee decennia weer op de filosofische agenda. Als passie werden ze in de geschiedenis van de filosofie overwegend niet alleen als tegenovergesteld mar ook als inferieur aan de rede gezien. Als er al door filosofen over werd geschreven was dat vooral negatief en om voor te schrijven hoe de ratio ze zou moeten en kunnen beheersen. In de klassieke oudheid bestaan hier gematigde Aristoteles en radicale de Stocijnse filosofen varianten van. Maar tegelijk is het opmerkelijk dat juist zij de traditionele tegenstelling tussen emoties en ratio al bestreden. Dit is waarschijnlijk naast de aandacht voor geluk en levenskunst in hun praktische filosofie de verklaring van het feit dat juist deze filosofen op het moment weer zo actueel en relevant blijken te zijn. «
