In 1940 werd het Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds opgericht als 'Spitfirefonds'.De bedoeling was geld in te zamelen voor de strijd van de geallieerden tegende Duitsers. Na de oorlog maakte het een doorstart als fonds voor de cultuurfinanciering.Met een landelijk bureau in Amsterdam en afdelingen ('Anjerfondsen') inalle provincies en de drie grote steden Amsterdam, Rotterdam en Den Haagkon het Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds al snel duizenden culturele activiteitenper jaar steunen. Van de dorpsfanfare tot het Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest,van de plaatselijke volksdansclub tot het Nationaal Ballet, van Jenevermuseumtot Rijksmuseum en van buurtfestival tot Holland Festival. Sindsmidden jaren zeventig richt het fonds zich ook op het natuurbehoud, entegenwoordig specialiseert het zich bovendien in het geven van adviezenover mecenaat.In Een mecenas van belang beschrijven Gert-Jan Johannes en Arno Neele delotgevallen van dit breed georiĆ«nteerde cultuurfonds sinds de oprichting.Daarmee geeft het boek ook een indruk van de verrassende rijkdom en veelzijdigheidvan de Nederlandse cultuur, en van de veranderingen die zich deafgelopen 75 jaar hebben voorgedaan in het culturele landschap.
