Als sportland telde Nederland voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog nauwelijks mee. Karel Lotsy (1893-1959) was de man die daar verandering in bracht. In de crisisjaren beleefde het Nederlands voetbalelftal onder zijn bevlogen leiding gouden tijden. Zijn 'donderspeeches' waren fameus. Duizenden mensen kwamen luisteren naar zijn inspirerende lezingen over de mysterieuze krachten in de sport.
Ook als chef de mission bij de Olympische Spelen van Berlijn, Londen en Helsinki wist hij sporters met zijn energieke en enthousiaste optreden naar triomfen te leiden. Hij vocht na de oorlog als KNVB-voorzitter voor het behoud van het amateurisme, maar kon de komst van betaald voetbal in 1954 uiteindelijk niet tegenhouden. Teleurgesteld trok hij zich terug in zijn werk bij verzekeraar de 'Holland van 1859'. Hij stierf, opgebrand, in 1959.
Lang na zijn dood kwam Lotsy in opspraak vanwege vermeende misstappen in de oorlog, hoewel de zuiveringscommissie voor de sport hem in 1945 had vrijgesproken van collaboratie. In Amsterdam werd de Karel Lotsylaan daarom in 1998 van naam gewijzigd.
Deze biografie laat aan de hand van vele nieuwe, onthullende bronnen zien hoe volksheld Karel Lotsy het slachtoffer kon worden van journalistieke, wetenschappelijke en politieke dwalingen.
