Laten we de materie buiten beschouwing, dan hebben we het niet meer over de werkelijkheid. De werkelijkheid is er als materiële werkelijkheid. We kunnen er niet dankbaar genoeg voor zijn! Het christelijk geloof kan zijn inhoud niet duidelijk maken zonder zich te verstaan met de materie. Laten we de materie buiten beschouwing, dan hebben we het niet meer over het christelijk geloof. En dat vooral brengt de concretisering van de inhoud van het geloof in een uiterste verlegenheid.
In dit boek doordenkt Cornelis Stam een opvallende, zo niet alarmerende tendens in de theologie van de negentiende en twintigste eeuw. Die theologie draait voor een groot deel rond begrippen als ziel, geest, vrijheid, eeuwig leven allemaal abstracta, welbeschouwd. En dat terwijl ons leven voor een groot deel draait rond uiterst concrete zaken. We eten, drinken, sporten, kleden ons om, tuinieren, doen lichtknopjes aan en uit en vreemd genoeg zijn er maar weinig theologen die dezelfde schakelaars ook in hun denken weten te vinden. Ze lijken te vergeten dat God de mens heeft neergezet als een lijfelijk wezen op een stoffelijke aarde. Juist dat maakt hem tot schepper, juist dat maakt hem anders dan wij. Want, om het inleidende motto van A. A. van Ruler aan te halen: Om stof te scheppen moet men wel God zijn.
Wat betekent de vraag naar de materie voor de grondslagen van de theologie? Op even subtiele als vasthoudende wijze daagt de auteur zijn collegas uit om de consequenties van deze perspectiefwending te overdenken. Een visionair antwoord heeft hij niet maar de vraag zelf stelt hij met grote urgentie.
Dr. C. Stam (1934) was vele jaren studentenpredikant te Groningen. Van zijn hand verscheen in 2003 De opstanding van de doden in de theologie van K. Barth, R. Bultmann en W. Pannenberg.
