Toen geografische kennis van de west nog gering was en de geheimen van de tinhandel werden nogal succesvol geheimgehouden door de zeelieden van Gades en anderen die zaken deden in metalen. Wisten de Grieken alleen dat tin kwam van de zee van het verre westen, en het idee van tinproducerende eilanden gemakkelijk ontstond. Later, toen de West beter was ontdekt, kwam men erachter dat tin uiteindelijk kwam van twee gebieden, noordwest Spanje en Cornwall. Beiden konden kleine eilanden genoemd worden of beschreven worden als voor de noordwest kust van Spanje liggende, zoals de Griekse en Romeinse geografen de Cassiteriden identificeerden. Moderne schrijvers hebben de fout dat de Cassiteriden definitieve plaatsen waren laten voortduren, en hebben vele pogingen gedaan om hun te identificeren. De Scilly-eilanden werden genoemd. «
