Sinds de kredietcrisis van 2008 hebben westerse regeringen allesin het werk gesteld om hun economieën op orde te krijgen enze weer te laten groeien. Dat is niet of nauwelijks gelukt. De Nederlandseeconomie bijvoorbeeld is per saldo gekrompen en de werkloosheidis naar een recordhoogte gestegen. Door het beleid van decentrale banken zijn de rentestanden tot de allerlaagste niveaus ooitgedaald, en toch hebben bedrijven, ook in Nederland, zelden zoweinig geïnvesteerd als nu. Gezinnen, de traditionele spaarders, zienhun reële inkomen dalen, terwijl aan de top van het bedrijfslevende beloningen hoger zijn dan ooit tevoren. Tegelijkertijd heeft Nederlandeen recordoverschot op zijn betalingsbalans en is de schuldenbergvan bedrijven, banken, gezinnen en overheid alleen maar grotergeworden.
