Book
Ugly Stories of the Peruvian Agrarian Reform reveals the human drama behind theradical agrarian reform process that unfolded in Peru during the final threedecades of the twentieth century. That process began in 1969 when the leftleaning military government implemented a drastic program of landexpropriation. Seized land was turned into workermanaged cooperatives. Afterthose cooperatives began to falter and the country returned to civilian rule inthe 1980s members organized to dismantle them and distribute the land amongthemselves. In 199596 as the agrarian reform process was winding down andneoliberal policies were undoing leftist reforms the Peruvian anthropologistEnrique Mayer traveled throughout the country interviewing people who hadlived through the most tumultuous years of agrarian reform recording theirmemories and their stories. While agrarian reform caused enormous upheavalcontroversy and disappointment it did succeed in breaking up the unjust andoppressive hacienda system. Mayer contends that the demise of that system iscomparable in importance to the liberation of slaves in the Americas. «
