The Ziz a large somewhat clumsy mythical bird returns in a Hanukkah storyoffering an unlikely explanation for how one days oil lasted eight. Frustratedby how nights winter darkness prevents him from accomplishing his eveningtasks the Ziz looks for ways to light his path. Finally he decides toapproach God on Mt. Sinai who gives him an oil lantern that burns brightlyeach night. But his newfound treasure begs sharing from his fellow mountaindwellers. Unwilling the selfish Ziz flies away with his precious lanternstopping to rest at the Holy Temple newly reconstructed after the Maccabeevictory. He overhears Judahs worried voice about not having enough oil tolight the eternal menorah. The Ziz decides to approach God once more and Hecommands the Ziz to help Judah with the oil in his lantern. Colorful paintingsin deep tones illustrate this original tale with its goofylooking overgrownyellowbodied bird with redandpurple plumes.
