Ongeveer de helft van de patiënten met een migratieachtergrond spreekt onvoldoende Nederlands om een gesprek met een hulpverlener te kunnen voeren en begrijpen. Dit geldt ook voor veel doven en slechthorenden. Dat is een zorgelijke constatering.Dit boekje beoogt de gevoeligheden rond ‘taal’ te benoemen en te beschouwen en op basis daarvan een taalbeleid voor de gezondheidszorg te formuleren. In dit kader gaat het onder meer over: taal en taalvaardigheid, de emotionele en politieke betekenis van taal, het overbruggen van de taalkloof in een consult, tolk- en taalbeleid en de economische, ethische en praktische aspecten daarvan. Er wordt volop aandacht besteed aan de gespreksvoering zelf en de inzet van tolken bij speciale doelgroepen: patiënten en cliënten in de geestelijke gezondheidszorg en kinderen die in een meertalige omgeving opgroeien. Dit boek vormt de neerslag van de jarenlange betrokkenheid van de auteur bij het thema taal, tolken en toegang tot de zorg. Haar kennis en ervaring bouwde zij op door onderzoek, het geven van workshops en onderwijs, en in de samenwerking met tolken in de praktijk van de hulpverlening. Een groot deel van de geboden informatie is ook van toepassing op gespreksvoerders buiten de gezondheidszorg, zoals in de juridische sfeer en in de maatschappelijke dienstverlening. Voor tolken is het zinvol te lezen wat tolkgebruikers over hun werk te vertellen hebben. «
