Dit proefschrift presenteert recente ontdekkingen voor partitiefuncties van vierdimensionale zwarte gaten. Deze partitiefuncties zijn belangrijke instrumenten om de entropie van zwarte gaten microscopisch te verklaren in snaartheorie en M-theorie. De resultaten zijn toegepast in twee centrale onderzoeksthemaÂ’s in moderne theoretische natuurkunde, namelijk de correspondentie tussen de natuurkunde (inclusief gravitatie) in een Anti-de Sitter ruimte en conforme veldentheorie, en de relatie tussen zwarte gaten en topologische snaren. «
