Vertrekpunt voor het beeldend werk teksten films geluidsopnames performances en fotoreeksen van de Ierse kunstenaar Orla Barry 1969 Wexford zijn de teksten die ze zelf schrijft. Deze teksten bevatten anekdotes verzinsels beschrijvingen maar ook tal van biografische elementen. Ook in haar beeldend werk zijn er verschillende elementen zoals de zee het strand de drukte van de stad etc. die Barry als ingredinten in een eigen systeem met elkaar verbindt. De krachtige beelden roepen tal van associaties op en geven plaats aan herinneringen en intimiteit. Tijdens de tentoonsteling in het S.M.A.K. is haar nieuwe filmproductie Portable Stones in premire gegaan een film die ze in 2004 draaide deels in Oostende deels aan de Ierse kust. Parallel brengt het museum verschillende andere werken van Barry samen zowel fotoreeksen tekstpanelen als geluidsinstallaites. Orla Barrys writings express the way we think. They leap from one subject to another alternating between important facts and minor observations between personal impressions memories and imagination.The images she creates are dictated by words but do not simply illustrate them. There is an interaction between word and image the end result is an acute tension that enhances them both.For the last three years Orla Barry has been working on a new film called Portable Stones which was shot last spring in Belgium and Ireland.It will be screened for the first time at the three exhibition venues in Ghent S.M.A.K. DublinIrish Museum of Modern Art and London Camden Arts Centre. At each venue the film will be complemented by more of Barrys work depending on the possibilities and specific spaces in each venue.This publication is an overview of her work from her first pieces in the early nineties to her latest film Portable Stones. «
