Nederland en Duitsland maakten na afloop van de Eerste Wereldoorlog kennis met moderne dansen en jazzmuziek uit de Verenigde Staten. De negatieve respons van de gevestigde muziekwereld vond weerklank in andere sectoren van de samenleving jeugdbeweging universiteiten godsdienst en politiek. Morele en politieke argumenten wogen hierbij zwaarder dan de zuiver muzikale kritiek. Deze politisering mondde in Duitsland na 1933 uit in een systematische bestrijding van swing en jazzmuziek door het naziregime. In Nederland hield de overheid zich vooralsnog afzijdig. Na mei 1940 veranderde dat. De door het propagandaministerie van Goebbels en de Reichsmusikkammer afgekondigde maatregelen moesten ook in Nederland doorgevoerd worden. Musici journalisten programmakers en horecaexploitanten kregen te maken met een stroom van voorschriften en verbodsbepalingen waarmee de vrijheid van muzikale meningsuiting aan banden werd gelegd. Ongewenschte muziek geeft een gedetailleerd beeld van de geschiedenis van de jazz en amusementsmuziek in Nederland en Duitsland tot 1945. «
