Er is een groeiende aandacht voor de positie van mensen met een handicap ten aanzien van arbeid. Onder de noemer 'supported employment' is in de jaren tachtig van de vorige eeuw in de Verenigde Staten een begin gemaakt met het ondersteunen van mensen met een ernstige (verstandelijke) handicap op een reguliere werkplek. Dit groeide uit tot een ware emancipatiebeweging die ook Europa bereikte.
Supported Employment is nu een geaccepteerde strategie om mensen met een ernstige handicap te ondersteunen bij het vinden en behouden van een betaalde baan in het reguliere bedrijfsleven. Er is een toenemend aantal organisaties dat zich richt op de volledige integratie van mensen met een een handicap in het reguliere arbeidsporces.
In dit boek wordt aandacht besteed aan die ontwikkelingen. Er wordt een analyse gemaakt van de mogelijkheden die de samenleving biedt om arbeidsintegratie te bevorderen. Op basis hiervan wordt een aantal keuzen gemaakt dat richting geeft aan de invoering van supported employment. Uitgewerkt wordt wat dit betekent voor organisaties. Het accent ligt op strategieën die leiden naar werk voor mensen met een stoornis of beperking. Vervolgens gaat het over op ondersteuning die op de werkplek geboden kan worden. Het gaat om betaald werk(arbeid), maar voor andere vormen van werk - vrijwilligerswerk, stages, werkervaringsplekken - kunnen deze strategieën ook goed van pas komen. Belangrijk is dat aangesloten wordt op de dagelijkse praktijk. Daarom is telkens een duidelijk verband gelegd tussen theorie en praktijk. Met behulp van casuïstiek, interviews en literatuuronderzoek worden deze verbanden geïllustreerd.
