In alle bescheidenheid kan cabaretier en kunstschilder Jeroen van Merwijk (1955) zich de wellicht wel allerbeste en meest veelzijdige Nederlandse liedjesschrijver uit de vaderlandse geschiedenis noemen.
Van Merwijk zelf doet dat echter allerminst. Hij laat loftuitingen graag aan anderen over. En lof wordt hem nu al jarenlang van alle kanten toegezwaaid. Naast zijn humor en ironie wordt Van Merwijk geroemd om de helderheid en schijnbare eenvoud waarmee hij de problemen schetst van een samenleving in verval.
Na Wat zijn de vrouwen groot, de eerste verzamelbundel van zijn liedteksten, verschijnt nu de opvolger Ik ben een vrouw. Het bevat de teksten van de liederen die Van Merwijk de afgelopen tien jaar in diverse Nederlandse theaters en op radio en televisie ten gehore bracht. In de bundel toont Van Merwijk op overtuigende wijze aan dat Amerika de bakermat van de twintigste-eeuwse Westerse cultuur is, dat iedere Nederlander een koning is, dat feestjes het leukst zijn in de keuken en dat Van Merwijk zelf, net zoals veel van zijn mannelijke collega's, een vrouw is. Bovendien zal de beeldend kunstenaar Van Merwijk de teksten van de cabaretier Van Merwijk in deze bundel op welhaast middeleeuwse wijze verluchtigen. «
