Een Amerikaanse verpleegster in een veldhospitaal op een paar kilometer afstand van het front in Belgi anno 1916 dus vlak bij de gruwelijkheden van een onbegrijpelijke loopgravenoorlog. Ellen N. La Motte was in 1915 vrijwillig naar Europa gekomen om er achter de linies te werken. Zij maakte er dagelijks de ellende van de soldaten mee ze zag ze zwaar verminkt bij bosjes binnengebracht worden zij zag ze uren dagen wekenlang lijden en creperen. Als verpleegster ervoer La Motte aan den lijve hoe het bedrijf werkt dat oorlog heet de machinerie van dood en verderf opportunisme onverschilligheid en idiote ambities. En ze besluit erover te schrijven niet haar ogen te sluiten maar haar impressies gevoelens en gedachten zo realistisch mogelijk tot uitdrukking te brengen. Ze doet verslag van het menselijk wrakhout overal om zich heen. Haar verhalen zijn zo illusieloos zo deprimerend zo sarcastisch ook dat de publicatie ervan nog tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog in haar geboorteland Amerika leidde tot een verbod van het boek.SPRINTER «
