In 1856 werd de vrijdenkersvereniging De Dageraad opgericht. De vrijdenkers hebben in Nederland altijd een minderheid gevormd. In hun strijd voor vrijheid van meningsuiting, vrijheid van expressie, tolerantie en menselijke waardigheid moesten zij opboksen tegen de gevestigde orde, in het bijzonder tegen de kerken.
Daarmee is niet gezegd dat de min of meer georganiseerde vrijdenkers in de vereniging De Dageraad, sinds 1957 bekend als De Vrije Gedachte, een marginale positie hebben bekleed in het moderne Nederland. Integendeel. Met Multatuli, F. Domela Nieuwenhuis, Aletta Jacobs, S. van Houten, Anton Constandse en vele anderen waren de vrijdenkers een bijzondere, niet te verwaarlozen factor in de samenleving. Ze stonden aan de wieg van het moderne liberalisme, het socialisme, het feminisme, het antimilitarisme, de seksuele hervorming en het anarchisme.
In deze bundel belichten filosofen, historici en sociale wetenschappers uiteenlopende aspecten van het vrijdenken en de Vrijdenkersbeweging. Naast de geschiedenis stellen zij ook de toekomst van het vrijdenken aan de orde: een actuele zaak, nu het religieuze fanatisme overal terrein wint. «
