Bachelor Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Economics BusinessGeneral printed singlesided grade 8 University of Groningen Faculty ofEconomics and Business language English abstract This exploratory studydiscusses the feasibility of a licensing system for licit opium cultivation forpharmaceutical purposes in selected areas in rural Afghanistan from variousangles and its general implications for the concept of local economicdevelopment LED. Apart from the general architecture of the proposal thispaper will critically reflect whether the propositions have been made undercareful consideration of the political and sociological conditions prevalent inAfghanistan presently. It will be argued that this specific project lacks thecapabilities to be economically viable if implemented as such also it will behypothesized that the Afghan state still lacks the security and controlconditions necessary to make this programme a sustainable success. «
