In 1523 werd in het dwangslot Vilvoorde bij Brussel de Friese edelman Jancko Douwama gevangen gezet, beschuldigd van verraad jegens de keizer. Hij heeft zich nooit kunnen verdedigen in een proces. Dankzij een bewonderenswaardig doorzettingsvermogen slaagde hij erin de ontberingen en martelingen tien jaar lang te doorstaan. Daarbij vond hij houvast in het beschrijven van zijn strijd voor het zelfbeschikkingsrecht van de Friezen en het weerleggen van de aantijgingen van zijn tegenstanders. Zo verantwoordde hij zich, vooral tegenover zijn vrouw en kinderen. Jancko Douwama’s Geschriften werden jarenlang via het secreet de gevangenis uitgesmokkeld. Zij vormen een indringend ‘document humain’ en zijn tegelijk één van de vroegste en omvangrijkste autobiografische apologieën in ons taalgebied. Deze bloemlezing, in modern Nederlands, wil de roep van een mens ‘uit de diepte’ opnieuw hoorbaar maken. «
