The Dutch School of Thermodynamics flourished at the Universities of Amsterdam and Leiden during the period 1890 and ca 1910. It consists of a combination of Gibbs thermodynamics and Van der Waals equation of state. A remarkable representative of this School was Johannes Jacobus van Laar (1860-1938). who worked at the University of Amsterdam between 1898 and 1912. In 1989 a thermodynamic point was called after him. This book describes his life and work. Van Emmerik took his doctor's degree at the Technical University of Delft.
