Nemen woestijnen onze leefomgeving over? Het klinkt misschien nu nog ver weg maar het kan realiteit worden in de nabije toekomst. Woestijnvorming heeft tijdens het maken van dit programma al invloed op 2.6 miljard mensen in 110 verschillende landen. In combinatie met onze toenemende vraag naar water veroorzaakt het een massale migratie van boeren naar de steden waardoor de achtergelaten zandvlaktes zich ongecontroleerd kunnen uitbreiden. Verwoestijning slaat overal toe deze documentaire helpt ons de gevaren te begrijpen en voorziet ons van mogelijke oplossingen waarmee we het verschil kunnen maken. Deze documentaire met adembenemende high definition beelden laat zien hoe woestijnen invloed hebben op de twee continenten Azi en Europa. In deel 1 reizen we af naar China waar ernstige droogte en het opdrogen van grote delen van de Gele Rivier er voor hebben gezorgd dat water een steeds kostbaarder bezit wordt. Verschillende multinationale projecten waaronder het lsquoGreen Great Wallrsquo zijn opgezet om de droogte tegen te gaan. In deel 2 van deze documentaire blijkt dat Portugal Spanje Itali en Griekenland al zwaar zijn getroffen. Ook Bulgarije Hongarije Roemeni Rusland en de Oekrane verliezen gestaag belangrijke grond door verwoestijning. Samen met Lester Brown van het lsquoEarth Policy Institutersquo bekijken we de woestijnen van Spanje en IJsland van dichtbij. Het vakantieparadijs Benidorm in Spanje is een berucht voorbeeld van het vernietigingmechanisme dat door de mens veroorzaakt wordt. De gigantische hotels zuigen letterlijk het Spaanse achterland droog. IJsland vertoont daarentegen een beter toekomstbeeld aangezien het eens zo groene vruchtbare land opnieuw herbeplant gaat worden.
