In een eigen, beeldende stijl beschrijft Arjen Terpstra de tegenstrijdige krachten in het leven van Tjalling van der Zee, van het Friese Gaasterland tot het Amerikaanse Montana.
Gaasterland, 1921. De zevenjarige Tjalling ziet hoe een extreem droge zomer de koeien en paarden gek maakt van dorst en de boeren tot wanhoop drijft. Deze ervaring zal zijn leven bepalen, een leven van najagen, van weinig woorden en onderdrukte gevoelens, van roekeloosheid en overmoed. Hij raakt gefascineerd door Amerika en alles wat Amerikaans is. De grote auto's, de sigaretten en cowboyhoeden, maar ook de ruwe pioniersmentaliteit en de spreekwoordelijke oneindige mogelijkheden. Hij verspeelt echter zijn kans de grote oversteek te maken. Zijn tweelingbroer Tjeerd vertrekt in zijn plaats naar Californiƫ om hun geƫmigreerde oom Hotse bij te staan.
Het is een familietragedie die Tjalling jaren later toch naar Amerika voert, naar de lege ruigte van Montana waar hij de grenzen opzoekt, niet alleen van zijn eigen wezen, maar ook van de wet.
Over de auteur
Arjen Terpstra (1948) was zeeman, journalist, cameraman en ondernemer. Hij heeft zijn hele leven geschreven, filmscripts en toneelstukken, gaf klassieke muziek uit en bouwde bedrijven op. Als hij verloor begon hij weer opnieuw. Dat verbindt hem met Amerika, het land waar hij zich buiten Friesland het meest thuis voelt. De heren van Friesland is zijn eerste roman. «
