This book contains the first Dutch translation with ample notes of theoldest grammatical manual in the West Dionysius Thraxs Tekhne Grammatikedating to the secondfirst century B.C. The translation based on a thoroughphilological reexamination of the Greek text is preceded by an extensiveintroduction dealing with the textual transmission of the Greek manual thebackground of Dionysiuss grammatical conceptions rooted in philosophicalrhetorical and philological theories and practices the structure of themanual and the grammaticographical approach it also contains a criticalsynthesis of the debate on the authenticity of the manual and its relationshipto Alexandrian grammatical scholarship. The edition of the Greek text of theTekhne is followed by a brief account of the methodological principles adoptedfor the translation into Dutch and by the Dutch translation supplemented withsome hundred notes on questions of terminology and doctrine. To the Dutchtranslation is appended W. K rchners newly revised German translation of theTekhne preceded by a note on the translation technique. The book is roundedoff with a very detailed terminological concordance of the technical terms andexpressions in the Tekne and their German and Dutch translations following theorder of appearance of the terms in the Greek text and by an exhaustivebibliography on the text editions and the translations of the tekhne and abibliographical survey on ancient grammar and on the Tekhne grammatike inparticular Peeters 1998 «
