1889. English naturalist evolutionist geographer anthropologist and socialcritic and theorist who spent many years in the Malay Archipelago. On thebasis of his observations of its flora and fauna he arrived at the theory ofnatural selection independent of Darwin learning of their codiscovery ledthem to publish it in a joint paper. An American lecture tour became theinspiration for one of his major works Darwinism which consists largely ofthe topics he had lectured on presented one chapter at a time.
