Book
Besides indergoing dramatic transformations within its own geographical domain, the Arab world is witnessing high human mobility and a surge in departees. Meanwhile, legislators and policymakers in Europe struggle to accommodate the rising numbers of these Arab migrants, whose domestic contexts, notions of citizenship and histories can no longer be ignored.'Citizenship in the Arab World' is the fruit of five years of onsite research on citizenship in the eighteen Arab-majority and Arabic-speaking countries of the Middle east and North Africa. The work blazes a path, describing how the Arab world combines different levels of membership (in the kin group, the religious community and the nation-state) to create a multifaceted concept of citizenship. It shows, moreover, that these social and legal expressions of membership are deeply embedded in the local political milieu and are somehow perpetuated by migrants in their new settings.Through the interdisciplinary approach of comparative legal studies, the book brings in theories and concepts from anthropology, political science, Arab and Islamic studies, linguistics and sociology. All sources have been accesses in their original languages from a broad range of Eastern and Western references. The translation and romanisation of Arab texts and legislation is provided by the author. «
