Begin 2008 werd bekend dat in Nederland een Kortijkse arts levenslang werd geschorst. Volgens het rapport van de Nederlandse Inspectie voor de Volksgezondheid ontvingen de patiënten kosmische energie die een beschermende laag over hun zieke organen zou leggen en soms ook nieuwe organen zou aanmaken. De betreffende arts had nog een normale praktijk in een Kortrijks ziekenhuis, maar werd inmiddels geschorst. Hij werkt echter wel verder in zijn privépraktijk thuis. Korte tijd later kwam aan het licht dat een Limburgse arts zijn patiënten met hepatitis B zou hebben besmet. De betreffende arts werd door de Orde van Geneesheren geschorst, maar ging hiertegen in beroep. Hierdoor kon hij gewoon doorwerken. De Standaard blokletterde 'Gezondheid bevolking van ondergeschikt belang'.
Dit boek is het eerste dat het probleem van artsen in gebreke (of disfunctionerende artsen of probleemartsen) in België onder de loep neemt. Artsen in gebreke zijn die artsen die structureel over de schreef gaan. Het gaat, zo wordt algemeen aangenomen, om een kleine groep artsen. Nochtans kunnen deze artsen behoorlijk wat schade aan de volksgezondheid aanrichten. Het boek richt zich op de regulerende instanties op landelijk vlak, zoals de Orde van Geneesheren, de provinciale geneeskundige commissies en de Dienst voor Geneeskundige Controle van het RIZIV. Op mesoniveau werden twee grote Vlaamse ziekenhuizen bestudeerd.
De auteur
Rita Schepers is doctor in de sociale wetenschappen. Zij volgde in London een MSc as applied to medicine. Haar proefschrift handelde over de professionalisering van het medisch beroep in de 19de eeuw. Na een postdoctoraal mandaat van het (N)FWO ging zij naar het instituut Beleid en Management Gezondheidszorg aan de Erasmusuniversiteit te Rotterdam, waar zij hoofddocent werd. Einde van de jaren negentig ging zij terug naar de KULeuven en werd hoogleraar medische sociologie. «
