Op 25 februari 2009 crasht om iets voor half elf 's morgens tijdens de landing een passagiersvliegtuig van Turkish Airlines in een akker op ongeveer anderhalve kilometer voor de Polderbaan van Schiphol. Het toestel breekt in drie stukken, maar er breekt gelukkig geen brand uit. Aan boord bevinden zich 135 inzittenden, van wie zeven bemanningsleden. Vier passagiers en vijf bemanningsleden, zo blijkt later, overleven het ongeval niet.
(Zelf)redzaamheid tijdens de Poldercrash geeft een verhalende reconstructie van de handelingen die de passagiers en toegesnelde omstanders hebben uitgevoerd om zichzelf en anderen te redden, en de wijze waarop professionele hulpverleners met deze (zelf)redzaamheid zijn omgegaan. Aanvullend hierop geven de passagiers, omstanders en de professionele hulpverleners hun perceptie over en motivatie van hun handelingen. Dit onderzoek laat zien wat overheden en hulpdiensten kunnen leren van de Poldercrash als het gaat om het handelen van burgers mede in relatie tot het handelen van de professionele hulpverleners. Ook biedt het inzicht in de behoeften van burgers bij een dergelijk ongeval. Het geeft bovendien concrete aanknopingspunten om de zelfredzaamheid en redzaamheid van passagiers en omstanders bij een (gelijksoortig) vliegtuigongeval beter te kunnen benutten en te versterken. «
