Naast zijn schrijverscarrière was Borges ook professor literatuur aan de universiteit van Buenos Aires, hoofd van de nationale bibliotheek en voorzitter van de Sociedad Argentina de Escritores. Hij ontving een aantal eredoctoraten en een nationale literatuurprijs van de Universidad Nacional de Cuyo. In 1971 ontving hij ook de Jerusalem Prize for the Freedom of the Individual in Society.
