In 1998 kreeg de Rotterdamse architectengroep BIQ de opdracht voor de herontwikkeling van tuindorp Kethel in Schiedam. Een buurt voor de gematigde middenklasse eenvoudige woningen met een tuin. Het type woning dat in Engeland een noddy house wordt genoemd naar een gelijknamige hoofdpersoon van een bekende kinderboekenreeks.De stelling die door BIQ Architecten in het onderzoek naar het renovatievraagstuk is ingenomen is verrassende vernieuwend. Zo stellen zij dat bij renovatie aanpassingen die door de bewoner zelf zijn aangebracht meegenomen moeten worden. Zij benaderen deze Gammacultuur niet als probleem maar als aanzet tot mogelijke oplossingen. Bij renovatie dienen casco en bewonersinvesteringen met elkaar in evenwicht gebracht te worden. Via historisch onderzoek privfotoarchieven en een beeldessay van Piet Rook wordt in het boek duidelijk gemaakt hoe in Kethel is gewoond. Met de beschrijving van de architectonische sociaaleconomische en volkshuisvestelijke overwegingen bij de renovatie worden uiteenlopende verhaallijnen naast elkaar gepresenteerd. De bundeling van deze verhaallijnen is interessant aangenomen mag worden dat dergelijke complexe geschieenissen ook in andere buurten bestaan. «
