In december 2008 presenteert het Groninger Museum de grootste overzichtstentoonstelling van werken van John William Waterhouse 18491917 die ooit is georganiseerd. Vele prachtige werken komen uit Australi Taiwan en Canada en zijn niet eerder in Europa te zien geweest.De kunstenaar werd in Rome geboren maar verhuisde al spoedig naar Londen. Daar assisteerde hij in het atelier van zijn ouders die beiden kunstenaar waren. Hier ontwikkelde Waterhouse zijn belangstelling voor schilderen beeldhouwen en de klassieke oudheid. In 1870 werd hij toegelaten tot de Royal Academy of Arts. Hij maakte naam in de jaren zeventig van de negentiende eeuw met opzienbarend oorspronkelijke en vaak melancholische afbeeldingen die aan de klassieke oudheid waren ontleend. Door zijn rijk gekleurde geladen afbeeldingen van mooie vrouwen krijgt Waterhouse veel waardering in de jaren negentig van de negentiende eeuw. De onderwerpen die Waterhouse ontleent aan auteurs als Ovidius Keats Boccaccio Shakespeare Shelley en Dante zijn loftuitingen op de hartstochtelijke passie voor vrouwen water natuur liefde en dood. Vaak met duistere ondertonen die duiden op zijn fascinatie met de onderwereld. Tot zijn boeiende taferelen behoren Ophelia Circe Hylas and the Nymphs La Belle Dame Sans Merci en Echo and Narcissus.Tegenwoordig wordt Waterhouse vaak een ModernePrerafaliet genoemd. Hij was ook een vertegenwoordiger van de nieuwe tijd en volledig bewust van de spannende artistieke vernieuwingen in Parijs in de tweede helft van de negentiende eeuw. Waterhouse voelde zich thuis in de betoverende wereld van mythen en sagen maar heeft zich ook laten inspireren door pozie en muziek en de lossere toon van het Frans impressionisme.De passie van Waterhouse voor schoonheid leeft onmiskenbaar voort in de prachtige schilderijen die hij naliet en waarvan vele te zien zullen zijn in het Groninger Museum.Illustration J.W.
